“It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine.)” — R.E.M.
Yes folks, the end may finally be here without a single crazy religious group involved as FOX and Marvel jointly announce two new Marvel-related pilot series possibly coming to television based on X-Men related properties. Hellfire for FOX Television will follow the legendary Hellfire Club set in the 1960s as they explore a corrupt upper-class society club of mutants who pull many of the strings that keep the world spinning. You may happen to remember this same idea briefly seen in X-Men: First Class with Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw and January Jones as Emma Frost.
“HELLFIRE is a unique opportunity to be able to go deeper with some of these extraordinary characters, but to also dramatize new characters and give TV viewers a chance to experience this expanded world in an explosive way that everyone will be talking about,” commented Jonathan Davis, President, Creative Affairs, 20th Century Fox Television. “The action at the center of HELLFIRE will be dynamic and will satisfy the rabid fans, but that said, newcomers will surely be addicted too!”
As if one TV series isn’t enough for FOX, FX Networks will get its own show in the form of Legion. David Haller is just a schizophrenic or at least he’s always thought he was. In reality he’s the son of Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller — an Israeli Holocaust survivor. Being a mutant isn’t easy and for David… being a multiple personality disorder mutant could be even worse because each of those raging personalities within him vying for control also has their own unique power for his body to control.
“The pilot introduces the story of David Haller: Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.”
What does this all mean in the end? Quite a bit, but we won’t know everything for a while. The easiest things to take away are this: FOX and Marvel have reached a deal so that FOX can move forward with their own mutant television shows. A deal we previously knew hinged on Marvel approving of the shows first for television. Are they related to the MCU? No, not at all. Does this mean we’ll see mutants like the X-Men in the Avengers movies? Also no. What this does mean is that FOX has offered up money and/or the remaining rights they have to non-mutant titles to Marvel/Disney which we will learn about later. After bombing recently this summer, the Fantastic Four or Cosmic pieces of it could be finding their way home to Marvel Studio’s MCU in the near future.
